Rio Grande Specialty Pharmacy

For RGU / RGCS Patients Only

An important part of maintaining your urological health is having a clear understanding of any medication you need to take to treat issues such as a bladder or urinary tract infection, erectile dysfunction, or prostate cancer. That’s where the RGU Pharmacy can help.

Types of services provided

“The RGU Pharmacy was initially set up to focus on medication for advanced prostate cancer, including Zytiga, Xtandi, and Erleada.” says Jennifer Guerra, PharmD, RGU’s dedicated pharmacist. “We’ve since expanded to include other medications like Tadalafil (Cialis) and Sildenafil (Viagra).” Dr. Guerra notes that there are several benefits to having a smaller, more focused pharmacy available for RGU patients, including access to experts in understanding these medications.

Access to urological expertise

The RGU Pharmacy is a Class A, physician-owned pharmacy. That means when an RGU doctor prescribes one of the available medications, the RGU Pharmacy works closely with that doctor to ensure the patient gets the right prescription and dosage for their needs. “If you have a question and can’t reach your urologist, you can call me,” says Dr. Guerra. She often counsels’ patients, explaining proper use, checking in on side effects, working to adjust the dosage if necessary, and, for patients taking multiple medications, completing a drug interaction check to ensure they don’t conflict.

Quality customer service

One benefit of a small pharmacy is the proactive care the pharmacist provides. Dr. Guerra is known for offering an extra level of service to the patient. “I check in on our patients about three weeks after they start a prescription to ensure they are doing ok and not experiencing any unusual or extreme side effects,” she says. If they are, she will counsel them on how to minimize or stop medication while he works with their urologist on next steps. Patients also receive notifications when it’s time to refill a prescription.

discounted medication costs

The RGU Pharmacy also offers competitive pricing, with medications like Tadalafil (Cialis) and Sildenafil (Viagra) available at a 20 percent savings compared to other pharmacies. The pharmacist also works closely with the RGU staff on insurance coverage, helping patients navigate any challenges with insurance they may encounter.
